The Northern Pearly Eye Butterfly sits on a chair
This butterfly is called the Northern Pearly Eye and it is a common butterfly in northern Michigan this time of year. It is brown with black spots, and can easily be confused with other small spotted butterflies. The Northern Pearly Eye is a bit larger than most, and often has an erratic flight high in the air. Consult a butterfly guidebook in order to tell all the different species apart.
Icy East Twin Lake

I am re-posting some scenes of an ice covered lake in Michigan.
Leaves Frozen in Lake
New ice forming
I am re-posting some photos from the last couple of years. This is lake in northern Michigan. In the first photo, the ice formed early, trapping the fall leaves. In the second photo, the ice is just starting to cover the lake.
Leopard Frog by Big Bear Lake
This is a picture I took a few years ago of a Leopard Frog on Big Bear Lake in Michigan. This is only the second time I have seen this frog. It was just sunning itself by the lake as I was walking by, and I just happened to see it. It is quite a striking frog, but I think the spots probably work well as camouflage.
Red Squirrel on White Pine Tree
This is a photo I took a couple of years ago of a Red Squirrel on a white pine tree. Red Squirrels prefer white pine trees to other trees because they like the pine nuts. As you can see, they are not really red, but are more of a reddish-brown. They are also very active and like to chatter a lot. I have more information on them here: https://studiobluespruce.wordpress.com/2014/10/04/red-squirrels/
Leaves Frozen in Lake
This is a picture of leaves frozen in the ice of an inland lake in Michigan. It is the same lake in the photo Pine Tree by Frozen Lake . I think its really interesting the way the leaves got stuck in the ice like this, I’ve never quite seen it this way before, but we had an early freeze last year.
Pine tree by frozen inland lake
This is a photo of a mostly frozen inland lake in Michigan. There is a white pine tree overlooking the lake. This photo was taken last year, as we are having rather warm temperatures this year.
toad in flower pot
This is a photo of a toad that decided to make it’s home in a small flower pot. It is in the flower pot at left, and it came back to the same flower pot for many days.
rosy maple moth
This is a photo of a Rosy Maple Moth that I found resting on a wall near my house during the daytime. It had a fuzzy yellow head, pink and yellow wings, and rose-colored feet. This has definitely been the most unusual moth I have ever seen. Soon after I took the photo, it flew away.
This is another photo of a foggy lake in Michigan. There is a small island in the lake that you can see straight ahead in the distance, through the fog.
Snowy East Twin Lake
Snow on Pine Tree, Winter Lake
This is a picture of a lake in Michigan after a snowstorm. There is so much heavy snow on the pine tree, that it has bent the tree over. Click on the image to see full size.
Gourds and Apples
These were some gourds and apples I put out for the fall, and eventually they got covered with a dusting of snow.
The apples were eventually eaten by the local wildlife
Apples half-eaten by local wildlife
A few years ago I took these photos in June or July, on the same Michigan lake featured in my photo “Sailboat on a Lake”. I was just walking along the beach when all of a sudden this duck family walked out into the water not far from me. The ducklings were very young, and did not have adult feathers yet. I didn’t realize that young ducks were spotted, but when you think of it, it makes sense, for camoflage reasons.
Sailboat on Little Wolf Lake
Sailboat on Michigan Lake
This is a lake in Michigan that has a lot of birds like ducks and geese. There is also a campsite, but no boat launch. If you bring a boat, it needs to be carry in only, so you need to bring something that you can carry down a hill and back up, like a canoe or kayak. The sailboat probably belongs to people who live on the lake. Also, the campsite is very rustic (no electricity, pump your own water) so you have to like that sort of thing!
